Located at the west end of Harvard Avenue, Harvard Broad consists of two Queen Anne/Colonial Revival homes—the Robert E. Smith House (576 Broad Street) and the William Halton House (39-41 Harvard Avenue). Originally built as a two-family investment property and a large single-family dwelling, these homes were once among the most deteriorated properties on Broad Street, suffering from arson and neglect.
Through creative public-private partnerships, Omni Development Corporation led their rehabilitation in the early 1990s, restoring their historic character while providing affordable family housing. Recognized for their architectural and historical significance, both homes are listed on the National Historic Register, ensuring their preservation as part of Providence’s architectural heritage.
Harvard Broad is part of “Four Sisters,” a collection of properties spanning different Providence neighborhoods, including a midrise in downtown and garden-style buildings in Elmwood.
